Press Release Body: CS Healthcare is just one of a number of private health insurance providers who are welcoming a review of top up care bans by the NHS. The Government has said that they are going to carry out a full review with respect to patients who have had NHS services denied because they top up their care with private treatment.
This has occurred in parts of the UK making assessing cancer drugs even more of a post code lottery with some cancer patients being stopped from receiving their NHS treatment, simply because they had topped up their care with drugs that were unavailable on the NHS. However, it has now been agreed by the Government that the time is right to have another look at this issue.
Joanne Lumb, Head of Medical & Provider Services, commented;
\"Patients who take out private health insurance should not be penalised and have essential treatment refused, just because they have taken extra measures to ensure their health is looked after\".
As it stands at the moment, anyone who tops up their treatment, for example paying for drugs through private health care, may be prevented from having the support of the NHS in monitoring the progress and effects of those drugs. This is the same across the UK and many doctors as well as patients have come out in opposition against the ban. This has aided the Government\'s decision immensely.
With the future funding of the NHS treatment being put under scrutiny, it would seem a missed opportunity not to allow either patients of insurers to supplement elements of a patient\'s care where expensive drug therapies are concerned. The NHS seems to have an inconsistent approach to private funding with such services as dentistry not affected by this so-called ban.
The main issue seems to be where both NHS and private treatment is being received for the same episode of care where expensive treatments are required. Some elements of the NHS seem to want to work against the patients needs rather than assist them in funding a treatment that may improve their chances of life.
Joanne Lumb further stated;
\"We at CS Healthcare welcome this review since our members are only looking to receive the best possible care and treatment they can, and there is an underlying right to free NHS services under the NHS Act 1977. This right should not cease to exist simply because a patient is receiving private treatment..
CS Healthcare is just one of a huge number of providers who are welcoming a review of top up care bans by the NHS. The Government has said that they are going to carry out a full review regarding patients who have had NHS services denied because they top up their care with health care insurance.\"
